What Relocation Taught Our Family
By Vic and Amy Petrenko, The Petrenko Group
Over the course of Vic's 31-year military career, our family relocated 16 times, including several moves during our children's high school years. While Vic served in leadership assignments and deployments around the world, Amy provided the stability and consistency that helped keep family life on track through each transition. Together, we learned firsthand what it takes to adapt to new communities, navigate uncertainty, and create a sense of home wherever life leads.
Those experiences shaped our family in remarkable ways. Despite the challenges of frequent relocations, our children thrived, going on to attend Princeton University, Harvard Business School, Purdue University, and the UNC School of Medicine. Their success wasn't because moving was easy; it was because we learned how to embrace change, build resilience, and turn every new beginning into an opportunity. Later, when both children were attending university, Vic was selected to serve as an advisor to the King's son in Saudi Arabia, and Amy joined him overseas, further expanding the global perspective and cultural understanding that continue to influence how we serve clients today.
What Moving Taught Us About Real Estate
Every move taught us something about what matters when you are buying, selling, or transitioning to a new place. We learned that the quality of your real estate representation shapes the entire experience. A great agent can turn a stressful relocation into a successful transition. A poor one can make it miserable.
We also learned that every family's needs are different. A military family on a PCS move has different priorities than a retiree downsizing. A growing family needs different things than an investor. A first-time luxury buyer needs more guidance than a seasoned purchaser.
The Emotional Weight of Moving
Moving is not just a logistical challenge. It is emotional. You are leaving a community, a school, friendships, and the familiar. You are asking your family to trust a new place. That weight is something we carry into every client relationship because we have felt it ourselves, many times over.
We understand the anxiety that comes with relocating a family. The uncertainty about schools, neighborhoods, commute times, and whether the new place will feel like home. That understanding shapes how we guide our relocation clients. We take the time to learn what matters to your family, and we use our experience to help you find the right fit.
Why We Chose Lake Norman
After 31 years of service and 16 moves, we chose Lake Norman as our forever home. We chose it for the water, the lifestyle, the community, and the quality of life. We chose it because after seeing so many places, we knew this was where we wanted to put down roots.
That personal connection to the area, combined with our professional experience, gives us a unique perspective. We are not just agents who work here. We are families who chose to live here, and we want to help other families make the same transition with confidence.
How This Experience Serves Our Clients
Our military background gives us a framework for how we approach every transaction. Strategic planning before action. Calm decision-making under pressure. Clear and consistent communication. Attention to detail that catches problems before they become costly. Follow-through that does not end until the job is done.
Most agents react to situations. We anticipate them. That is not just a slogan. It is the product of 16 moves and a career built on preparation and execution.
When you work with The Petrenko Group, you are not just hiring real estate agents. You are partnering with advisors who understand what it feels like to relocate, invest, transition, and protect a family's future. Because we have lived it. Many times over.
